Les TIC han creat un gran impacte en el funcionament de les organitzacions i han alterat, fins i tot, la seva propia estructura. Les TIC generen diversos efectes, depenent de la funcio que tinguin dins l'organitzacio. Aquest article vol caracteritzar quatre grans funcions de les TIC en les organitzacions, amb efectes i necessitats de gestio diferents. Per a identificar aquestes quatre funcions, l’autor porta a terme un repas cronologic de l'impacte de les TIC en les organitzacions des del 1960 fins als nostres dies, i conclou l’article amb una tipologia funcional de les TIC.
