The author of Celestind makes frequent use of restatements of information-such as this one-to accomplish a number of ends: characterization, emphasis, establishment of causality, amplification, multiple perspective, and summary, to name but some of these ends. I will examine the first of these, characterization, to show how Fernando de Rojas works with recapitulations to enhance character portrayal, long recognized as a salient feature of the Tragicomedia!
