En débattant entre eux et en répondant aux questions de la salle, ces troiscompositeurs abordent des questions fondamentales telles celles du métier, de latechnique, du geste, du langage et de la syntaxe, de la forme, et de l’esthétique.Au-delà des réponses provisoires qu’ils avancent, cette transcription offre unevue sur le fonctionnement ordinaire du débat esthétique et technique à Darmstadtvers la fin de la période qu’on pourrait nommer « héroïque » — avec ses enjeuxidéologiques, ses rivalités et avec sa façon toute particulière de déterminer lesproblèmes de la création musicale contemporaine.A previously unpublished transcript of three round table discussions held atDarmstadt in July of 1963, whose participants included Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulezand Henri Pousseur. Each composer describes the subject of his course. In the debateamongst the round table participants and members of the audience that follows, thesethree composers raise fundamental questions about artistic craft, technique,gesture, language and syntax, form and aesthetic. Beyond the provisional observations put forward by these composers, thistranscript sheds light on the practices surrounding aesthetic and technical debateat Darmstadt near the end of the so-called "heroic" period, with its ideologicalsparring, rivalries, and highly particular manner of setting forth problemsassociated with contemporary musical composition
