Dans cet article, nous proposons une définition de la tête morphologique qui se distingue de celles qu’on trouve généralement dans la littérature (depuis Williams (1981)) en ce qu’elle est intrinsèque plutôt que (totalement ou partiellement) positionnelle. La tête d’un mot complexe est le constituant dont le mot est hyponyme, c’est-à-dire le constituant qui partage les traits sémantiques et, par implication, les traits syntaxiques de sa projection. Cette définition permet une analyse directe des noms composés en créole haïtien si l’on admet que la tête, définie intrinsèquement, peut avoir une position différente dans les mots composés (gauche) et dans les mots dérivés par affixation (droite).Since Williams (1981), the head of a word is generally defined as the rightmost or leftmost position. In this paper, we propose a different definition, an intrinsec one: the word is a hyponym of the constituant which is the head of the word; that is, the head is the constituant which shares the semantic and syntactic features of the word. Data from haitian Creole provide arguments which support this definition. Compound nouns in Haitian can be analyzed in a straightforward manner once we assume that the head can have one position in compounds (at the left) and another position in words derived by means of affixation (at the right).
