Cette recherche applique la fonction de coût translogarithmique à l’industrie québécoise du camionnage public. Les variables explicatives de cette fonction de coût comprennent une mesure de l’output, les prix de quatre facteurs de production ainsi que cinq variables technologiques qui veulent refléter les caractéristiques opérationnelles des entreprises québécoises.Les principaux résultats pertinents de l’analyse économétrique, qui se comparent avantageusement à ceux des chercheurs américains, sont les suivants. Premièrement, les paramètres de l’élasticité-prix propre de chacun des facteurs sont négatifs et statistiquement inférieurs à l’unité. Deuxièmement, les coefficients des élasticités de substitution possèdent tous le bon signe et leur ordre de grandeur est conforme aux prévisions théoriques; tous les facteurs semblent être des substituts. Troisièmement, l’entreprise québécoise moyenne peut réaliser des économies d’échelle relativement importantes. Ces dernières peuvent se réaliser par une augmentation de la charge moyenne, par une meilleure capacité d’utilisation de la flotte de véhicules et par un accroissement du pourcentage de lots brisés dans leur production multiple. Par contre, ces économies d’échelle ne peuvent pas être obtenues par un accroissement de la distance parcourue en raison de la configuration et la dissémination des flux de marchandises entre les villes du Québec. Quatrièmement, la main-d’oeuvre et à des degrés moindres le capital et le carburant sont les principaux facteurs touchés par une modification des cinq variables technologiques.Finalement, ces derniers résultats économétriques permettent certaines conclusions en termes de politique économique. D’abord, quelques-uns des coefficients d’élasticité-prix laissent entrevoir que l’industrie québécoise fait déjà affaires dans un environnement relativement concurrentiel. Deuxièmement, peu de changements majeurs à l’américaine sont à prévoir au Québec si on déréglemente graduellement l’industrie.This research estimates a translogarithmic or translog cost function for the Québec trucking industry. This cost function includes three sets of independant variables, the first being a variable measuring the physical output; the second set is four prices of factors which are used in the production process of a trucking firm and the third set is composed of five technological conditions describing the operational characteristics of Québec trucking firms.Main relevant econometric results are in accordance with those obtained by American researchers. In a nutshell, they are the following. First, the estimated own price elasticity for each factor is negative and statiscally inferior to unity. Secondly, the estimated partial elasticities of substitution are generally in accord with prior expectations on their respective sign and their order of magnitude; all factors are substitutes. Thirdly, the average Québec trucking firm would exhibit strongly increasing returns to scale. The latter may be realized by an increase in the average size per shipment, by a better capacity utilization of its trucks and by an increase in the percentage of LTL freight in its multi-products mix. However, those increasing returns to scale cannot be achieved by an increase in the length of haul because of the configuration and the spreading of the flows of goods between the cities and towns of the Province of Québec. Fourthly, labour and at lesser degrees, capital and fuel, are the main production factors affected by a change in the five technological conditions.Finally, some political economy considerations may be deduced or inferred from these last econometric results if the latter are compared with previous researches. First of all, some of the estimated price elasticity coefficients give an indication that the Québec trucking industry is operating in a competitive environment. Secondly, few major changes as those that occured in the American industry since the 1980 deregulation, may happen if the industry is gradually deregulated
