Dans cette analyse deYAjaxde Sophocle, on a cherché à tenir compte des pratiques culturelles susceptibles d'éclairer la mise en scène du suicide. Il s'agit notamment de comprendre la métaphore du sacrifice dans le dernier monologue d'Ajax ainsi que le problème posé par le cadavre, dans lequel se confondent coupable et victime. Confusion dont une loi athénienne connaît le remède, stipulant que la main du suicidé doit être coupée du cadavre et enterrée séparément. Or, dans la pièce de Sophocle, aucune main ne tient l'instrument de mort ; l'épée sur laquelle Ajax se jette devient au contraire le boucher-sacrificateur.By taking relevant cultural practice into account, this analysis of Sophocles'Ajaxtries to clarify the staging of the hero's suicide. The sacrificial metaphor used in Ajax's last monologue must be carefully situated, and so must the problem of the dead body, in which the catégories of murderer and victim are confounded. Athenian law knows the remedy for this confusion, stipulating that the suicide's hands must be eut off from the body and buried separately. In Sophocles' tragedy, however, no hand holds the instrument of death ; on the contrary, thesword on which Ajax throws himself becomes a sacrificial butcher
