En 1734 se développe un débat sur la notion de philosophie. Prévost avait opposé, dansCleveland et dansle Pour et contre , la philosophie « anglaise » à une « française », d'inspiration chrétienne. Dansle Cabinet du philosophe , Marivaux prend parti pour la seconde; il fonde la morale et la religion sur des « lumières naturelles » innées; il reprend l'apologétique pascalienne dans un vocabulaire moderne (raison, sociabilité, vertu), mais il donne pour mission au philosophe d'approfondir les vérités religieuses. À l'opposé, Voltaire, dansles Lettres philosophiques , limite l'usage du mot philosophie à l'empirisme anglais, donnant ainsi à ce qu'on appelait la « philosophie païenne ou naturelle » une assise théorique.The year 1734 saw the emergence of a debate concerning the notion of philosophy. InCleveland andle Pour et contre, Prévost had contrasted "English" philosophy with "French", the latter being Christian in inspiration. Inle Cabinet du philosophe Marivaux took up the cause of "French" philosophy, ascribing morality and religion to the innate "light of nature" (lumières naturelles), and reaffirming Pascal's apologetics in modern terms (reason, sociability, virtue). For Marivaux, the philosopher's mission, however, remains that of giving greater depth to the truths of religion. By contrast, Voltaire, inLettres philosophiques, restricts the application of the word philosophy to English empiricism, thereby placing what was known as "pagan or natural philosophy" on a theoretical foundation
