L’auteur étudie la période de démarrage de l’industrie du bois à pâte au Québec en cherchant à reconstituer sa chronologie. Un examen des séries statistiques disponibles l'amène à s'intéresser aux données des forêts publiques, et plus particulièrement aux unités de mesure en vigueur dans cette industrie. Des modifications, en apparence anodines, aux règles de mesurage du bois à pâte, tel le passage de la corde de bois au pied mesure de planche, seront mises en relief. Ces modifications révèlent, de la part de l’État québécois, une stratégie qui était passée inaperçue aux historiens jusqu'à maintenant : l’État favorise et impose finalement une transformation de la matière ligneuse sur place en accordant, en contrepartie, de généreuses mais discrètes réductions des redevances aux entrepreneurs.The author examines the period of the pulpwood industry's take-off in Quebec, seeking to reconstitute its chronology. The statistical series available permit the study of the public forest data. The author is looking more closely at the units of measurement used in this industry. Modifications, apparently insignificant, made to the pulpwood measurement rules, such as the replacement of the cord by the fbm reveal a strategy on the part of the Quebec Government which has passed unnoticed by historians until now: the state forced the transformation of the amount of wood taken from the public forest by decreasing greatly but discreetly the timber dues or royalties
