Emiliano Zapata (1879-1919) et Francisco « Pancho » Villa (1878-1923) sont deux figures légendaires de la mémoire collective de la Révolution mexicaine (1910-1920). Nous analysons la manière dont l’histoire de ces hommes d’action est travaillée par le mythe sous la forme d’images. Nous verrons la distinction qui s’impose entre les mythes populaires nés localement à partir du processus révolutionnaire et le mythe national véhiculé par l’Etat postrévolutionnaire à partir de 1920. Nous trouvons ici confirmation de la thèse avancée par Roland Barthes dans Mythologies, selon laquelle la révolution elle-même n’est pas un processus mythique puisqu’elle est caractérisée par l’action. Le mythe ne s’élabore qu’une fois que le processus se fige. L’analyse vise à libérer l’histoire de la Révolution du mythe pour mieux l’interroger en tant que moment privilégié du politique.Emiliano Zapata (1879-1919) and Francisco “Pancho” Villa (1878-1923) are two legendary figures of the Mexican Revolution’s collective memory (1910-1920). We examine how the history of these men of action is conditioned by myth in the form of images. We draw a distinction between popular myths of local origin born from the revolutionary process, and the national myth conveyed by the post-revolutionary state, from 1920 on. We find confirmation here of the thesis advanced by Roland Barthes in Mythologies, according to which the revolution itself is not a mythical process because it is characterized by action; the myth is not elaborated until the process has begun to freeze or congeal. The analysis aims to free the history of the revolution from its myths, the better to examine it as a privileged moment of the political.Emiliano Zapata (1879-1919) y Francisco “Pancho” Villa (1878-1923) son dos figuras legendarias de la Revolución mexicana (1910-1920). En este ensayo se analiza cómo la imagen trabaja a través del mito en estos dos hombres de acción. Al mito popular, originado en sus respectivas localidades mientras que sucede la Revolución, se opone un mito llamado nacional por ser promovido desde el Estado post-revolucionario a partir de 1920. Retomando la tesis de Roland Barthes, en Mythologies, la Revolución misma no es un proceso mítico porque ésta se caracteriza por la acción; el mito se elabora una vez que el proceso revolucionario se ha detenido. Así pues, este estudio busca abstraer el mito, de la historia de la Revolución para poder interrogarla desde el momento privilegiado de lo político
