La pêche à l’anguille se faisait bien avant l’arrivée des Européens sur notre continent. Elle s’est pratiquée avec succès partout le long du Saint-Laurent pendant des siècles. Elle faisait partie du paysage côtier autant que du mode de vie saisonnier des pêcheurs et de leur communauté. Quelques-uns font encore la pêche à l’anguille au Kamouraska et perpétuent avec passion une tradition familiale transmise par l’oralité et l’observation du geste. Ces pêcheurs nous ont communiqué leurs savoirs et savoir-faire et ont démystifié la capture de ce poisson d’exception. La technique et les engins de pêche, l’historique de cette pratique et la problématique de ce patrimoine fragilisé font l’objet de cet article.Eel fishing was practised in North America long before the arrival of Europeans. For centuries, it was done successfully all along the Saint Lawrence River. Eel fishing was a seasonal activity that was part of a way of life for fishers living in communities along the shores of the river. The rare individuals who still practise eel fishing in Kamouraska maintain a strong attachment to a family tradition passed on through oral transmission and observation. These fishers have shared with us their knowledge and their abilities, thus revealing the mysteries surrounding the taking of this exceptional variety of fish. This article deals with fishing techniques, types of boats used, and also attempts to answer some of the questions that surround this fragile heritage practise
