Le point de départ de cette étude est l’hypothèse d’une nouvelle datation pour Judith, oeuvre du peintre québecois Ozias Leduc (1864-1955), reconnu tant pour ses grandes décorations religieuses que ses tableaux de chevalet. Cette nouvelle datation permet d’éclairer l’oeuvre à la lumière des écrits tardifs d’Ozias Leduc, dont l’auteure propose une relecture, visant à mettre en évidence leur fond métaphysique et religieux dans sa relation avec le rôle spirituel que le peintre accorde à l’image. Le symbolisme de Leduc, traditionnellement interprété en référence à l’esthétique thomiste de Jacques Maritain, gagne par cette analyse une nouvelle dimension, caractérisée par l’idée, de sensibilité existentialiste, d’un passage plus trouble entre le terrestre et le céleste, la matière et l’esprit.The starting point of this study is the proposition of a new dating for Judith, a work by Ozias Leduc (1864-1955), known for his imposing religious decors as well as for his easel painting. This new dating allows us to provide new insights on the work, informed by Ozias Leduc’s late writings, of which the author proposes a new interpretation, aiming to put their religious and metaphysical content, and the spiritual function given to the image by the painter, in relation to one another. This study affords a new dimension to Leduc’s symbolism. Traditionally understood in relation to Jacques Maritain’s scholastic aesthetics, it is characterized here by the idea, existentialist in scope, of a precarious passage between the terrestrial and the celestial, between matter and spirit
