Cet article propose une réflexion autour de l’histoire de la médecine en tant que discipline universitaire. Il se focalise notamment sur les débats qui ont lieu en France entre la seconde moitié du XXe siècle et le début du XXIe. Dans un premier temps, il rappelle les principaux courants théoriques de l’histoire médicale jusqu’au tournant épistémologique qui, au milieu du XIXe siècle, oppose les partisans d’une histoire médicale « philologique » aux partisans d’une histoire médicale « héroïque ». La deuxième partie porte sur les débats qui, en France, se développent à compter des années 1950 autour de la légitimité d’une histoire médicale faite par les médecins; cette remise en question fut propulsée par la « révolution des Annales » et le courant d’histoire sociale de la médecine qui s’est formé autour de Jacques Léonard. La troisième partie engage une réflexion sur l’avenir de l’enseignement et de la recherche en histoire de la médecine en France, et souligne la nécessité d’une coopération entre praticiens et spécialistes des sciences humaines et sociales en raison de leurs compétences respectives.This article reflects on the history of medicine as an academic discipline. It endeavours to focus on the debates that erupted in France from the second half of the twentieth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century. The first point surveys the main theoretical trends of medical history up to the epistemological turn in the middle of the nineteenth-century, which saw the opposition of the proponents of a “philological” approach to the promoters of a “heroic” medical history. The second point presents the debates that developed in France from the 1950s surrounding the legitimacy of a medical history by medical doctors; this questioning was set off by the Annales Revolution, as well as the historical trend around Jacques Léonard. The third point reflects on the future of the study and the research of the history of medicine in France, highlighting the need for cooperation between practitioners and humanities and social science specialists, thanks to their respective competences
