Les mouvements partitionnistes qui émergent au moment du référendum de 1995, et au cours des années suivantes provoquent de nombreux débats politiques et intellectuels qui touchent à la question de la négociation des frontières entre le Québec et le Canada en cas de sécession. Le sort de Montréal dans le cas d’un vote favorable à la souveraineté du Québec devient alors un enjeu majeur. Or, les antécédents du partitionnisme remontent à l’époque des Patriotes, alors que dans la province du Haut-Canada des ministres torys manifestent leur intérêt pour une modification des frontières qui transfèrerait sous leur contrôle l’ile de Montréal. Dans cette entreprise qui mène à une série de rapports et de résolutions adoptées par l’Assemblée, les officiers du gouvernement haut-canadien trouveront un appui de taille dans la mouvance tory de Montréal et surtout parmi les marchands et financiers anglophones de la ville. Le mouvement s’intensifie au milieu des années 1830, et la Montreal Constitutional Association, fondée dans le sillage de l’adoption des 92 Résolutions, revendique simultanément l’annexion de Montréal au Haut-Canada ou une union législative des deux provinces canadiennes. Enfin, le gouvernement impérial entame sa propre réflexion sur la question par l’entremise de la Commission Gosford qui séjournera dans la colonie en 1835-1836. Après le soulèvement armé de 1837, le sort de Montréal se joue dans les coulisses du parlement britannique et parmi les diverses figures politiques qui cherchent d’abord à influer sur le rapport de Durham et ensuite d’infléchir la politique qui sera élaborée par Lord John Russell afin de régler définitivement la question canadienne.The partitionist movements which developed at the time of the 1995 referendum and in the years which followed led to numerous intellectual and political debates concerning the borders of Québec and Canada in the case of secession. The future of Montreal in the eventuality of a vote favourable to Québec’s sovereignty became an important issue. However, the origins of partitionism can be traced the era of the Lower Canadian Patriotes, when Upper- Canadian tory office holders expressed an interest in modifying the borders in such a way as to bring the island of Montreal under their control. In a campaign which led to reports and resolutions being adopted in the Assembly, Upper Canadian office holders found important allies in Montreal’s tory circles, and particularly amongst the city’s English merchants and financiers. The movement picked up speed in the mid-1830s, as the Montreal Constitutional Association, which had been established in the wake of the 92 Resolutions, promoted both Montreal’s annexation to Upper Canada and the legislative union of the two provinces. Eventually, the imperial government undertook its own examination of the situation through the Gosford Comission which visited the colony in 1835-1836. After the armed uprisings of 1837, Montreal’s fate was decided in the backrooms of the British parliament, where various political figures first sought to influence the content of the Durham report and later the drafting of imperial legislation on the Canadian question by Lord John Russell
