De 1975 à 1982, sous l’égide de Patrick Plumet, alors professeur au Département des sciences de la Terre de l’Université du Québec à Montréal, a été réalisé le programme Tuvaaluk à partir d’une subvention substantielle du Conseil des Arts du Canada. Son principal objectif visait à contribuer à mieux connaître la préhistoire de l’Arctique québécois. Plumet préconisa de mettre au point une méthodologie d’analyse archéologique reposant fondamentalement sur le recours à l’informatique. Ce texte rappelle donc les grands enjeux d’une telle méthodologie alors que l’informatique en était principalement à une étape de machines dont la taille imposante ne correspondait ni à la vitesse ni à la capacité mémorielle aujourd’hui disponibles. Les ordinateurs de l’époque, alors gérés par des langages en voie d’élaboration, étaient manifestement peu efficaces. Précisons encore que cette période de réalisation du programme Tuvaaluk précédait les débuts de la commercialisation des micro-ordinateurs au cours des années 1980 qui eux-mêmes reposaient sur des logiciels déjà plus sophistiqués.From 1975 to 1982, under the leadership of Patrick Plumet, then a professor at the Department of Earth Sciences of the Université du Québec à Montréal, the Tuvaaluk Program was undertaken with a substantial grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Its main aim was to achieve a better understanding of the prehistory of Arctic Quebec. Plumet sought to develop a largely computer-based methodology for archaeological analysis. This paper describes the main issues raised by such a methodology, keeping in mind that computers were at that time largely at the stage of huge machines that lacked the speed and memory capacity now available. These computers were clearly less efficient and used languages that were still being developed. Furthermore, the Tuvaaluk program was carried out before laptops came on the market during the 1980s with their already more sophisticated software
