Cet article entend analyser le rôle de l’écriture en prose dans la rencontre entre Mallarmé et Claudel. Nous voulons démontrer que la prose, située généralement à l’abri de la « crise de vers », permet au contraire le développement d’une esthétique nouvelle dans ces deux oeuvres. La prose devient ainsi un vecteur de la « voix » qui unit les deux poètes, par-delà la distance géographique notamment, Claudel se trouvant, pour une majeure partie des années 1890, en Orient. On le voit dans la correspondance qu’ils s’échangent alors, mais aussi dans l’écriture de leurs proses, dont ils sont des témoins privilégiés. C’est ainsi que les deux poètes intègrent la parole dans leurs poèmes en prose qu’ils écrivent en miroir à cette époque, le Maître en donnant la voix au peuple, le disciple en se mettant à l’écoute des bruits, des sons et de l’Esprit orientaux qui lui semblent si neufs. En définitive, c’est par la voix de leur prose que ces deux poètes peuvent se dire : « Séparés, on est ensemble. »This article explores the role of prose writing in the meeting of Mallarmé and Claudel. We want to demonstrate that prose, which is generally considered as apart from the “verse crisis,” instead allows the development of a new aesthetic in the works of these two poets. Prose becomes a vector for the “voice” which unites them, the geographic distance notwithstanding, since Claudel was in the Orient the major part of the 1890’s. This phenomenon is obvious in their correspondence but also in their prose, the essence of their exchanges at that time. Thus, these two poets included the speaking voice in their prose poetry: Mallarmé in giving voice to the people and Claudel in listening to the noises, sounds and Spirit of the Orient, three things new to him. In short, it’s with the voice of their prose that both poets could say to each other: “Apart, we are together.
