Alors que les paysages sont récurrents dans l’abondante littérature de voyage, dans la tradition coloniale, ils ne semblent jamais occuper la première place dans les textes d’auteurs africains. Ruraux ou urbains, les éléments paysagers restent à l’état de fragments à l’arrière-plan. Nous nous demanderons à quelles conditions l’approche culturelle européenne du paysage est pertinente pour les productions africaines contemporaines. Faute de trouver des paysages tels que les attend l’oeil européen, nous rencontrerons des effets de déformation et de chaos. Enfin, nous tenterons d’évaluer les effets de lecture de tels textes aussi bien sur les lecteurs étrangers au contexte de production que sur ceux qui connaissent les paysages peu ou pas décrits. Notre analyse cherche à donner une nouvelle définition de la pratique scripturaire du paysage, délivrée d’une tradition issue de la Renaissance européenne à laquelle les littératures africaines sont étrangères.While landscapes are numerous in the vast literature of travel written in the colonial tradition, they never seem to figure prominently in texts by African authors. Be they rural or urban, the elements that compose them remain mere fragments in the background. We will ask ourselves to what extent the European way of thinking about the landscape can be relevant when it comes to analysing contemporary African writing. Since we will not be able to find landscapes as a European eye would perceive them, we will meet effects of deformation and chaos. Lastly, we will try and evaluate the effects of such texts on readers used to such a context of production as well as on those who know little or nothing about such landscapes. Our analysis seeks to give a new definition to ways of writing about the landscapes which could free themselves from a European tradition inherited from the Renaissance, with which African literature has nothing in common
