Cet article propose quelques balises pour une histoire de l’édition du reportage en France (1870-1939). Si l’effervescence des années de l’entre-deux-guerres est déjà connue, nous verrons que l’édition des années 1870-1914 est plus abondante qu’on a pu l’affirmer jusqu’à présent. L’étude du format et du paratexte des volumes permet de dégager, dans un premier temps, des stratégies de légitimation du geste éditorial et la construction de postures de reporters, à la croisée de plusieurs genres (chronique, reportage, mémoires) ou disciplines (histoire, ethnologie, littérature, journalisme). Nous distinguerons le tournant des années 1900 comme un moment phare pour l’édition du reportage, concurremment à d’autres phénomènes bouleversant les représentations du reporter. Nous reviendrons enfin sur les années de l’entre-deux-guerres afin d’illustrer la proximité entre reportage et fiction, à travers la mise en place d’un reportage feuilletonesque, soutenue par un dispositif d’édition populaire.This article proposes markers for the history of reportage publishing in France (1870-1939). While the effervescence of reportage publishing during the interwar period is well-known, we demonstrate that from 1870-1914 it was actually more abundant than was at first thought. Our study of the paratexts and formats of certain volumes highlights legitimization strategies of publishers and the construction of reporters’ postures, hybrids of either literary and journalistic genres (columns, reportages, memoirs) or of disciplines (history, ethnology, literature, journalism). We single out the early 1900s as a key moment for reportage publishing, when distinct phenomena work concurrently to create a turning point in the representations of the reporter. Finally, we return to the years between the two wars in order to illustrate how close to one another reportage and fiction became at that time through the introduction of a particular form of reportage that we refer to as “feuilletonesque,” or “serialized,” a form that was sustained by a popular publishing device
