L’artiste contemporain et le chercheur en sciences humaines partagent un même objectif : offrir une meilleure compréhension du monde dans lequel nous prenons place. Tous deux veillent à proposer des perspectives capables de donner sens au chaos d’informations, à la réalité qui nous entoure. Aussi n’est-il pas étonnant qu’ils partagent des méthodes communes. L’une d’elles, objet de cet article, consiste à proposer des images étonnantes qui, par leur originalité même, offrent un éclairage singulier sur la réalité. Nous suivrons ainsi la piste de la philosophie de Gilles Deleuze et de Félix Guattari et nous analyserons leur recours à des images botaniques et animalières pour réfléchir sur la pensée occidentale et la question du désir. Nous approcherons la pensée de Giorgio Agamben et tenterons de comprendre son usage d’images fortes, souvent choquantes comme propositions d’analyses historiques et sociales. Ces deux approches philosophiques pourraient nous inciter à croire que cet usage d’images, de métaphores – à donner à ce terme un sens cognitif –, est le propre de disciplines abstraites. Il n’en est rien ; le rôle du corail comme dessin et comme motif chez Charles Darwin, dans sa compréhension de l’évolution des espèces, montre bien que ce dernier n’a pu faire émerger sa nouvelle théorie qu’en prenant un objet, une image singulière comme levier. Dans le champ de l’art, nous recourons à deux exemples. Celui d’abord de l’exposition Intrus, présentée au Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec du 24 avril 2008 au 8 février 2009, qui permit, par la rencontre entre des oeuvres d’art contemporain et des oeuvres du passé, d’éclairer celles-ci d’une lumière nouvelle. Celui ensuite de l’oeuvre Lovers (2004) de David Altmejd, qui, si elle semble visuellement commenter le titre qui l’accompagne, ouvre plus profondément à une relecture de ces amoureux qui s’enlacent, voire des effets de l’amour.Contemporary artists and researchers in the social sciences share a common objective: to offer a better understanding of the world we live in. Both groups take care to offer perspectives capable of making sense of the information chaos that surrounds us. It should therefore not be surprising that they also share some common methodologies. One of these, the subject of this article, is the use of strange and amazing images that, by their originality, shed light on our complex reality. Thus, I explore the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s, analyzing their use of botanical and zoological images as they reflect on Western thought and the question of desire. I also explore thought of Giorgio Agamben while seeking to understand the use of striking and often shocking images as a way conceptualizing social and historical problems. In light of these two philosophical viewpoints, it would be easy to conclude that such use of singular images – in more cognitive terms, the use of metaphors – is restricted to more abstract and philosophical disciplines. That would be wrong. The role of coral, as an image and a motif, in Charles Darwin’s understanding of evolution of clearly shows how Darwin was only able to develop his new theory by using a unique object to structure his ideas. I also identify two similar examples in the field of contemporary art. First, the “Intruders” exhibition, presented at the Musée national des Beaux-Arts du Québec from 24 April 2008 to 8 February 2009, illustrated how a juxtaposition of contemporary and classical art can lead to new ways of reading both. Second, the sculpture “Lovers” (2004), by David Altmejd, not only acts as a visual commentary on its title but also invites a rethinking of the intertwined lovers depicted and even of the effects of love
