Cet article porte sur la conception du roman exposée par Louis Aragon dans deux textes, la nouvelle Le Mentir-vrai (1964) et l’essai Je n’ai jamais appris à écrire ou les Incipit (1969). Il montre que Les Incipit, dans le prolongement du Mentir-vrai, déploie deux arguments contradictoires, définissant l’écriture romanesque à la fois comme invention et non-invention, écriture et lecture. La mémoire se révèle au coeur de cette contradiction, dans le rapport paradoxal au réel qu’elle met en jeu. Confondant imagination et remémoration, le processus de création romanesque est en fin de compte défini comme mobilisation de l’imaginaire, réagencement des fragments de la mémoire.Louis Aragon defined his concept of the novel in his 1964 short story Le Mentir-vrai and in the 1969 essay titled Je n’ai jamais appris à écrire ou les Incipit. Each text develops two contradictory arguments about the novel, one that sees it as an act of creation and writing, the other as an act of non-creation and reading. At the crux of this dichotomy is memory and its paradoxical relationship with reality. Conflating imagination and recollection, the process of novel-writing for Aragon involves mobilizing one’s imagination and reorganizing one’s memory fragments
