The financial crisis that hit the group in 1974 led to a series of re-organizations but also presented management with some strategic choices. They could have been tempted to follow the easy way out which often leads to the mainstream. The article shows how the identity of the group was asserted in those years by making the social economy its primary target and getting membership involved. The foundations for Crédit coopératif ’s long-term growth were established as well as the ethos that would guide it through new changes in the late 1980s
