Cet article étudie la formation et le fonctionnement des organisations rurales des pays en développement en comparant deux grandes périodes caractérisées par des rôles très différents de l'État et de la « société civile ». Malgré les mutations considérables que ces organisations ont connues entre les deux périodes, on peut leur appliquer un même cadre d'analyse qui permet de mieux comprendre leur nature, leur importance et leur viabilité dans chaque situation. La place qu'elles occupent dans les stratégies des différentes catégories d'acteurs concernés — dominés ou dominants, intérieurs ou extérieurs — est étudiée. Ainsi, comment les rationalités de l'entreprise, de l'économie domestique et de la gestion publique se conjuguent-elles ? Champ de luttes entre les acteurs qui cherchent à les orienter en fonction de leurs intérêts respectifs, ces organisations ne sont-elles pas aussi un champ de convergences, de négociations et d'adaptations-concessions ?This article studies the formation and functioning of rural organizations in developing countries by comparing two main periods in which the state and civil society play very different roles. Despite the considerable changes that have taken place in these organizations between the two periods, a single analytical framework can be applied to them that enables a better understanding of their nature, importance and viability in each situation. The article looks at the role these organizations play in the strategies of the different categories of actors concerned—dominated or dominant, internal or external. How do the objectives of private enterprises, households and the state work together? A battleground among actors trying to orient them according to their own respective agendas, can these organizations also be a ground for convergences, negotiations and adaptations/concessions
