Cette communication trace le développement intellectuel de Claude Ryan et lesgrandes influences sur son catholicisme, de son adolescence durant les années 1930 jusqu’en1952, lors de son retour de Rome, alors qu’il a mené l’Action catholique vers une nouvelledirection. Ce texte propose que Ryan a fréquenté plusieurs réseaux et courantsintellectuels : une filiation de nationalisme libéral, marqué par son contact avec lejournalisme d’Olivar Asselin ; le personnalisme littéraire des romanciers catholiquesfrançais de 1900-1920 ; les écrits socio-politiques de Jacques Maritain, un mentorimportant, qui l’a introduit au courant néo-thomiste ; le « case-work » américainde son initiation à la profession du travail social ; et finalement, une conversion à lathéologie d’histoire formulée par saint Augustin, typique de nombreux intellectuelsnord-américains célèbres durant la période de l’après-guerre. Sa rencontre avec ces diverscourants a formé sa pensée sur les questions religieuses, politiques, et sociales, mais leurimpact a poussé Ryan dans la voie de l’intellectuel solitaire, suite à la faillite de sonprojet, à la fin des années 1940, de former un réseau de catholiques progressistes ancrésdans l’Action catholique.This article traces the intellectual development of Claude Ryan and the influencesupon his Catholicism from the Depression era, to 1952, when he returned from Rome to leadCatholic Action in a new direction. It argues that Ryan navigated among a number ofintellectual networks: a strand of liberal nationalism, represented by his contact with thejournalism of Olivar Asselin; the literary personalism of turn-of-the-century FrenchCatholic novelists; the neo-Thomist socio-political writings of Jacques Maritain, who wasone of his key mentors; the American-style “case-work” characteristic of the developingprofession of social work; and, finally, a conversion to a theology of history derived fromSaint Augustine, but typical of a number of prominent North American public intellectuals inthe postwar period. Exposure to these various currents formed Ryan’s thinking on religious,political, and social issues, but they ensured that he remained a solitary intellectual,especially after his failure, in the late 1940s, to build a network of progressive Catholicsanchored in Catholic Action
