À travers la comparaison du premier et du dernier directeur en date du TNP-Villeurbanne, institution exemplaire des valeurs et des missions du « théâtre public » français, l’enjeu du présent article est d’interroger l’évolution de ce modèle. Pour ce faire nous comparerons les différents aspects de la direction Planchon et celle de Schiaretti, s’agissant notamment du contexte de nomination du directeur, des modalités de la référence à la figure tutélaire de Jean Vilar, père spirituel du TNP, de la resémantisation de la notion de décentralisation, de la ligne esthétique défendue, et de la figure de l’État convoquée.The goal of this article is to draw a comparison between the politics of Roger Planchon and Christian Schiaretti, the first and the last directors of the Théâtre National Populaire (TNP) of Villeurbanne, a theatrical institution which symbolizes the french model of “ public theatre ”. We would specially like to compare their contexts of nomination, the kind of theatre they defend, the way they refere to the legendary figure of Jean Vilar, spiritual father of the TNP and of what we call the «décentralisation», that is to say the will to irrigate the all parts of the country and of the society with theatre, an art supposed to civilize and democratise the people
