La Montreal Free Library (1889- ) n'a jamais été mentionnée dans les études canadiennes et québécoises sur les bibliothèques. Son qualificatif de bibliothèque « gratuite » pose des questions nouvelles à propos de l'établissement d'une bibliothèque publique (1917) à Montréal, et avant même la fondation de la Westmount Public Library (1899). L'article fait l'histoire de cette bibliothèque, analyse le contenu de ses catalogues et l'inattendue proéminence du roman tout en dégageant la signification de cette gratuité dans le contexte de l'histoire des bibliothèques à Montréal à la fin du XIXe siècle.The Montreal Free Library (1889-) has never been mentioned in studies on libraries in Quebec and Canada. Its "free" quality raises new questions concerning the establishment of a public library in Montreal (1917) well before the foundation of the Westmount Public Library (1899). The article traces the history of this library, analyses the contents of its catalogues (and the unexpected prominence of the novel) while showing the significance of its being "free" in the context of the history of libraries in Montreal at the end of the nineteenth century
