Dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, des organisations religieuses américaines financent les activités de missionnaires francophones en Nouvelle- Angleterre. Au départ, les évangélistes perçoivent les villes industrielles du nord-est américain comme une terre de tolérance, où, par contraste avec leur pays d’origine, le prosélytisme sera facile et fructueux. Leur perception du travail dans les missions se transforme à mesure que prennent forme les Petits Canadas. L’espoir cède le pas à la désillusion. Les difficultés du travail missionnaire et les rapports avec les catholiques, qui deviennent conflictuels, colorent et orientent le discours des pasteurs et des protestants. De plus en plus, ils se perçoivent comme un groupe doublement minoritaire - minoritaire à l’intérieur des communautés franco-américaines, comme à l’intérieur de la société protestante américaine - dont la survie à moyen terme est menacée, malgré leurs efforts incessants pour définir leur identité et pour assurer leur cohésion.In the second half of the 19th century, American religious organizations funded the activities of French-speaking missionaries in New England. Initially, evangelists saw the industrial cities of the American Northeast as a land of tolerance, where, in contrast to their native country, proselytizing would be easy and rewarding. Their perception of mission work changed as "Little Canadas" took shape. Hope gave way to disillusionment. The hardships of missionary work and relations with Catholics, which became confrontational, began to colour and shape the discourse of the pastors and Protestants. Increasingly, they saw themselves as a minority group twice over - both within the Franco-American communities and within American Protestant society - a minority group whose survival in the medium term was threatened, in spite of their unwavering efforts to forge an identity for themselves and remain a cohesive force
