Lors d’une conférence, Rajeev Bhargava (2010) avançait que l’Inde pourrait servir de « modèle » aux pays occidentaux en matière de respect de la diversité religieuse. Il s’appuyait sur ce qui fait la spécificité de l’Inde, soit le fait que la diversité intra- et interreligieuse constitue le fondement même du sécularisme indien. Mais qu’en est-il dans les faits? En prenant le cas de la presse québécoise, j’ai voulu examiner ce qu’une partie de l’Occident « voit » lorsqu’elle tourne son regard vers l’Inde. Quels événements attirent son attention et comment sont-ils traités? Ce traitement est-il révélateur d’une certaine perception « occidentale » de l’Inde? Fait-il écho à la situation au Québec? Et, au-delà de toutes ces interrogations, est-il pertinent de parler de « modèle »?In a conference whose title was deliberately provocative, Rajeev Bhargava (2010) stated that India could serve as a model to the West regarding respect for religious diversity. This statement was founded on what makes India unique, i.e. the fact that intra- and inter-religious diversity are at the heart of secularism in India. Taking this observation as a point of departure, I examine how India is portrayed in the French language press in Quebec, in regard to how the country manages religious and cultural diversity, in terms of policies or concrete interethnic relations. What events are selected? How are they covered? Does this coverage reveal a Western-centric view? Does it echo events in Quebec/Canada? Finally, is the notion of “model” relevant
