L’analyse prosopographique des membres du conseil d’administration du Centre européen des fondations fournit un point d’entrée pour l’étude des luttes de définition dont la philanthropie européenne est le sujet. Elle permet notamment de montrer la forte hétéronomie d’un espace théoriquement soumis à l’exigence d’universalité : vocation le plus souvent tardive et liée à des espaces pourvoyeurs diversifiés (voire antagonistes), la philanthropie fonctionne pour beaucoup sur la logique du titre honorifique ouvrant ou consolidant un pouvoir multipositionné. Particulièrement sujette, par conséquent, à toutes les formes d’appropriation, elle apparaît comme l’une des modalités réglées de la lutte entre différents principes de légitimité au sein du champ du pouvoir, par laquelle se jouent, en partie, les reconfigurations des modèles d’intervention sociale.Prosopographic analysis of the members of the governing council of the European Foundation Centre provides an entry point for the study of definitional struggles taking place within European philanthropy. The findings underscore the strong heteronomy of a space theoretically subject to the requirement of universality. A vocation often taken up late in life and tied to diversified (if not antagonistic) types of donors, philanthropy works, for many, on the logical basis of an honorific title opening up or consolidating a multipositioned power base. Being particularly subject, therefore, to all forms of appropriation, it appears to be one of the regulated means of struggle between different principles of legitimacy within the field of power, through which the reconfigurations of social intervention models are, in part, being played out
