Dans cet article, Ève Lamoureux explore l’évolution de l’art engagé des artistes québécois de gauche des années 1970 à aujourd’hui. Elle décrit les pratiques, s’interroge sur leurs spécificités en comparaison avec celles du milieu international de l’art contemporain et réfléchit sur les conditions spécifiques influençant leur trajectoire. Elle montre ainsi que les caractéristiques générales de l’art engagé sont très similaires dans l’ensemble des pays occidentaux. On passe d’un art avant-gardiste militant à un art micropolitique misant sur l’investissement du spectateur dans le « faire sens » de l’oeuvre ou la participation. Cela dit, la conjoncture culturelle, sociale et politique particulière au Québec influence les pratiques, de même que la structuration du milieu des arts visuels et son évolution. Il en découle quelques spécificités : (1) une créativité foisonnante, (2) une expérimentation constante des artistes sur le plan des pratiques, mais aussi dans l’organisation de la production et de la diffusion, (3) une expertise théorique très riche, (4) une association beaucoup plus étroite des artistes engagés avec les thématiques portées aussi bien par les groupes communautaires, syndicaux et militants que par les partis politiques et, enfin, (5) une relation partenariale conflictuelle entre ces artistes et les institutions étatiques et artistiques qui, en définitive, a plutôt favorisé l’évolution de l’engagement dans et par l’art, malgré ses difficultés.In this article, Ève Lamoureux explores the evolution of “art engagé” by québécois artists on the left from the 1970s to the present day. In describing their practices, she compares them to those of the international contemporary art milieu and reflects on the specific conditions that influenced their trajectory. She shows in what ways the general characteristics of political art are similar across western countries. In particular, she identifies a passage from militant avant-gardism to micropolitical art that relies on the investment of the spectator in the process of making sense of the work and/or as a participant. Despite this similarity, the social, cultural, and political climate particular to Québec influences the pratices of québécois artists, as well as structuring the sphere of visual arts and its evolution. Some particularities flow from this : (1) abundant creativity, (2) constant experimentation by artists both with regard to their practices and to the organisation of artistic production and dissemination, (3) a rich theoretical expertise, (4) a tighter association between artists with community groups, interest groups and unions rather than political parties, and (5) a conflicted partnership between artists and artistic institutions and institutions of the state ; a partnership which, on the whole, favoured the evolution of political action by and through art despite its difficulties
