Le cinéma documentaire chinois et les politiques qui le régissent actuellement n’ont pas profité du vent de libéralisme intellectuel qui soufflait à l’heure des politiques de réforme et d’ouverture. L’analyse quantitative de la production de 1990 nous révèle les priorités du Bureau du cinéma; l’analyse rapide de quelques films nous dévoile les traits caractéristiques du genre documentaire tel que pratiqué par les « fonctionnaires » du cinéma chinois. On s’aperçoit que la réforme et l’ouverture, tout en permettant une diversification des tendances au sein du cinéma de fiction, ont par ailleurs provoqué une consolidation du rôle édificateur du documentaire. Celui-ci laissera aux générations suivantes l’image édulcorée d’une Chine idéalisée…Chinese documentary cinema and the policies under which it operates have not benefited from the currents of intelectual liberalism associated with recent policies of reform and openness. A quantitative analysis of 1990 documentary productions reveals the priorities of the Bureau of Cinema, and then a brief analysis of a few films highlights the characteristics of the genre as practised by the "bureaucrats" of Chinese cinema. While it is clear that reform and openness have led to a diversification fo tendencies in fiction films, in documentaries it has actually resulted in the consolidation of the idea that films should be edifying. As a result, what future generations will inherit is a watered-down image of an idealized China
