Parmi les ditférents écrits de la Bibliothèque copte de Nag Hammadi qui furent vraisemblablement composés entre le début du I Ie siècle et la première moitié du IVe siècle de notre ère, certains développent des traditions sur les femmes duNouveau Testament,dont le rôle est amplifié alors qu'il est au contraire plutôt minimisé dans les textes des autres communautés chrétiennes primitives. Ces textes coptes, appelés «gnostiques», soulignent par exemple, sur un ton polémique, la préférence marquée du Sauveur pour Marie-Madeleine au détriment de Pierre. On peut ainsi y déceler l'indice d'une polémique contre le type de christianisme qui s'appuyait sur la figure de Pierre, ce dernier symbolisant, semble-t-il, pour eux, une Église qui trouvait gênante l'autorité attribuée à une femme, alors qu'on organisait un ministère masculin. Cet intérêt particulier porté aux figures féminines duNouveau Testamentdécoule d'une conception androgynique de Dieu qui est présente en plusieurs traités gnostiques.Among the various writings, in Coptic, from the Nag Hammadi Library, generally dated from the beginning of the second century to the middle of the fourthcentury A.D., some develop different traditions upon the feminine figures of the New Testament, who play an important part in it, whereas their role is often minimized in the texts of the other early Christian communities. These Coptic writings, called "gnostic", underline for example, in a polemic tone, the marked preference of the Savior for Mary Magdalena to the detriment of Peter. Therefore, a polemic can be discerned in it against the type of Christianity which leaned on Peter's authority, who very likely symbolized, for them, a church which felt embarrassed about the authority conferred upon a woman, while one was setting up a masculine ministry.
