À l'aide de nombreux sondages d'opinion, l'auteur examine l'évolution de la perception qu'ont les Québécois et les Québécoises du syndicalisme depuis les années 1950. Bien que la population en général ne remette pas en question la nécessité de syndicats pour assurer la protection des travailleurs salariés, elle leur reproche néanmoins de détenir un pouvoir excessif et d'en abuser trop fréquemment. Ce sentiment, particulièrement vif de la fin des années 1960 jusqu'au milieu des années 1980, paraît lié à la fréquence et à l'ampleur des conflits de travail pendant cette période. La comparaison avec le reste du Canada et d'autres pays montre que les Québécois ont une image plus positive du syndicalisme que la moyenne desCanadiens et des Britanniques mais qu'ils sont plus critiques que nos voisins du Sud. Enfin, l'auteur tente d'expliquer la méfiance que soulèvent les syndicats par divers facteurs, notamment la difficulté pour la population d'accepter le caractère conflictuel des relations de travail.On the basis of many opinion surveys, the author examines the trends in the perceptions held by men and women in Quebec on the labour union movement since the 1950’s. Although the population at large does not question the necessity of unions to protect wage eamers, it nevertheless criticises them for holding too much power and for abusing it to often. This feeling, which was particularly strong frora the late 1960's until the mid 1980's, seems to be linked with the frequency and scale of labour disputes during that period. A comparison with the rest of Canada and other countries shows that Québecers have a more positive attitude toward the labour union movement than the average for Canada or Britain, but that they are more critical than our neighbours to the South. Finally, the author tries to explain the contempt that unions face for various reasons, in particular the difficulty that the population has in accepting the conflictual nature of labour relations
