L'auteur soulève, à partir de deux ouvrages d'historiens, l'un sur la folie au Québec, l'autre sur une épidémie de variole à Montréal, la question de 1'institution. Outre le flou conceptuel qui existe autour de celle-ci, se pose le problème de sa fonction. Est-elle d'abord vouée au contrôle social et si oui, quel type de conduite cherche-t-elle à contrôler? Une distinction est introduite entre le contrôle et la régulation des conduites, dans le cadre de l'émergence du concept de normalité.On the basis of two historical works, one on mental illness in Quebec and the other on an epidemic of smallpox in Montreal, the author raises the question of institutions. Over and above the conceptual vagueness that surrounds social control, and if so, then what type of behaviour do they seek to control ?
