Le ciel de Québec de Jacques Ferron s’offrecomme une oeuvre complexe et déroutante. Et ce, tant sur le plan de l’énonciation que surcelui du propos. Sur le plan formel, il relève du conte et de la fable, de l’épopée, duroman d’apprentissage, aussi bien que de la chronique et de l’historiette. Sur le planthématique, il emprunte plusieurs directions, se présentant tour à tour et simultanémentcomme un récit de fondation, une fable nationaliste, un règlement de comptes avec La Relève, une saga de l’Amérique amérindienne, une chroniquedes moeurs politiques des années 1930, uneréflexion sur l’art, la littérature et la peinture. Bref, il forme une véritablecourtepointe faite de pièces rapportées qui lui donnent un caractère hétérogène et bigarrésous lequel on peut toutefois retrouver une certaine unité liée à l’optimisme qui animealors l’écriture de Ferron et qui repose sur sa conviction de voir bientôt l’avènement dupays québécois comme autorité enfin souveraine. On peut donc le lire comme l’expressioneuphorique d’un nationalisme que la Crise d’octobre 1970 allait bientôt ébranler, imprimant une bifurcation décisive dans l’oeuvrede Ferron au cours de la décennie suivante et le conduisant à une prise de distanceeffective à l’endroit d’un projet historique de plus en plus incertain etproblématique.Jacques Ferron’s Le ciel de Québec is acomplex and disconcerting work, in expression as well as content. Its formal structure drawsupon epic and fable, the coming-of-age novel, the chronicle and the anecdote. Thematicallydiverse, it offers an elemental story, a nationalist fable, a settling of accounts withLa Relève, a saga of the North American Indian, achronicle on political mores of the 1930s, reflections on art, literature and painting. Thisgrab bag of disparate writings converges in a variegated unity to characterize Ferron’soptimistic vision of a sovereign Québec, the country in waiting. It can be read as aeuphoric statement of nationalism, soon to be shattered by the October crisis of 1970, withthe ensuing decade marking a decisive turn in Ferron’s work as he distanced himself from theincreasingly uncertain and problematic historic project
