Cet article cherche à identifier les facteurs qui régissent la réception scientifique de textes anciens et s’intéresse à ce qui peut expliquer l’abondance et l’absence d’études sur ces derniers. Cette enquête fut menée en étudiant de plus près la réception scientifique de cinquante textes contenus dans divers manuscrits à caractère « gnostique ». Des dix textes qui ont généré le plus et le moins de publications, une typologie fut dégagée. Il appert que, pour les textes les plus étudiés, les quatre facteurs les plus importants sont un contenu original, une datation ancienne, la figure à laquelle le texte peut être associé et une appartenance au genre « évangile ». Enfin, les dix textes les moins étudiés le sont en raison de facteurs matériel et herméneutique, s’ils sont déjà bien connus et s’ils sont tardifs. Cette analyse nous permet de mieux apprécier le rôle du chercheur spécialiste dans l’espace public contemporain. Les chercheurs, qui font partie d’une communauté interprétative au même titre que les médias ou le public non spécialiste, jouent un double rôle. Non seulement appartiennent-ils à une communauté interprétative qui relit les textes anciens avec un filtre qui leur est propre, mais ils sont aussi ceux qui rendent possible l’accès à ces textes aux deux autres éléments dont se compose l’espace public. Les chercheurs font donc partie d’un tout dont ils ne sauraient s’extraire.This article seeks to identify the factors that govern the scientific reception of ancient texts, and aims at explaining why certain of these texts are often studied by scholars while others are neglected. The study closely examined the reception of fifty texts contained in a number of “gnostic” manuscripts. A typology was drawn up on the basis of the reception of twenty of them, the ten texts which generated the greatest number of publications, and the ten which generated the least. It would appear that for the texts most studied, the four most important factors were originality of content, an early date of composition, the figure with whom the text is associated and its classification within the “gospel” genre. Finally, material and hermeneutical factors militated against the study of the ten least popular texts ; documents with a late date of composition and already well known to scholars being least favoured. This analysis allows us to better understand the role which scholars play today in the public sphere. Within an interpretative community which includes the media and the general public, academics play a dual role. Not only do they interpret these ancient texts respecting the norms established within their discipline, but they are also responsible for making them accessible to the media and the general public. Researchers are embedded within a wider interpretive enterprise from which they cannot escape
