L'adjectif « technique » : au-delà de la polysémie, l'histoire de révolution d'une attitude — Qu'ont de commun les titres Rédaction technique (Laganière, 1983), Traduction technique (Bédard, 1986), Vocabulaire technique de philosophie (Lalande) ? Un certain emploi de l'adjectif « technique » qui ne renvoie pas au même réfèrent. Cette polysémie, loin d'être un simple phénomène sémantique, a des racines profondes. Ce sont les avatars de cet adjectif que tente de retracer le présent article. En puisant à la fois dans l'Histoire des idées, dans l'histoire littéraire générale et dans la  lexicologie,   l'auteur  explique   le   contexte  idéologique   et sociologique qui, de l'Antiquité gréco-romaine au XXe siècle, en passant par les philosophes pratiques du XVIIe siècle et surtout les Encyclopédistes du XVIIIe siècle, a rendu possibles les relations « technique = scientifique », « technique = spécialisé », « technique = art » et « technique = technologie ». Il montre les incidences de ces relations sur la typologie des textes et propose, des types de textes dits « techniques », « scientifiques » ou « spécialisés » une définition moins équivoque car fondée, non point sur les concepts de Science et de Technique avec prévalence diffuse du concept de Technologie mais sur une opposition Science et Technique, la première définie comme un savoir pour le savoir, la seconde, comme un savoir ordonné sur l'action. Un texte tient son appartenance catégorielle non de son objet mais de sa visée. Un texte traitant de technologie est, dans tous les cas, spécialisé. Il est technique s'il est orienté vers la manipulation, l'interaction avec l'objet (un artefact par exemple); il est scientifique si la recherche de compréhension des principes sous-tendant l'objet en est la visée.The Adjective "Technique": Beyond Polysemy, a History of the Evolution of an Attitude — What do the titles Technical Writing. (Larmon, 1990) and McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Technical and Scientific Terms have in common ? They both use the adjective "technical," but in different ways. Such polysemy has deep roots and is more than a simple semantic problem. This article attempts to retrace the avatars of this adjective. Drawing on the History of Ideas, and the General History of Literature, as well as on lexicology, the article explains the ideological and sociological context which, from antiquity to the twentieth century, for the pragmatic philosophers of the seventeenth century and especially the Encyclopedists of the eighteenth century, made the following equations possible : technical = scientific, technical = specialized, technical = art, and technical = technology. It shows the impact of these relations on text typology and proposes a less equivocal definition for the types of texts referred to as "technical," "scientific" or "specialized," based not on definitions of 'scientific' and 'technical' in which the concept of 'technology' is present but rather on an opposition of two concepts (the former defined as knowledge for its own sake, the latter as action-oriented knowledge). A text belongs to a given category not because of its content, but because of its scope or purpose. A text about technology is necessarily specialized. It is technical if it is oriented toward manipulation, interaction with an object (artefact); it is scientific if its purpose is to understand the principles underlying the object studied
