Transparence et retraduction des sociolectes dans The Hamlet de Faulkner — Par « transparence », nous [le Groupe de recherche en traductologie, de l'Université McGiIl] entendons non pas l'occultation du travail de la conscience traduisante, mais au contraire l'émergence du traducteur comme pôle herméneutique incontournable. Notre entreprise de réactualisation veut tenir compte de deux facettes du texte faulknérien qui ont eu à souffrir de leur passage au français dans la première traduction de René Hilleret, à savoir le gommage tant de la composante sociolectale du roman que de ses effets comiques. Pour les rendre manifestes dans notre retraduction, nous avons choisi de puiser dans les ressources du vernaculaire québécois, produisant un ancrage géographique précis motivé non par le désir de naturaliser Faulkner, mais bien de le donner à lire à la francophonie via le Québec. Les notes qui accompagnent notre traduction s'effectuent en fonction du macrotexte en tenant compte de l'identité des personnages, des rapports de force, des situations d'énonciation, de nos choix antérieurs et des isotopies de l'oeuvre.Transparency and re-translation of sociolects in Faulkner's The Hamlet — This article presents a "transparent" retranslation of a passage from William Faulkner's The Hamlet by McGiIl University's Research Group in Translatology (known by its French acronym, GRETI), accompanied by an introductory text outlining some elements of the Group's positioning. By "transparency," the GRETI does not mean that the work of the translator should be invisible; on the contrary, we posit that s/he must inevitably be seen as a hermeneutical pole. Our re-actualization intends to account for two aspects of Faulkner's text that were adversely affected in René Hilleret's initial translation, which obliterated both the sociolectal component of the novel and its comic effects. To properly render these in our retranslation, we have chosen to draw on the resources of Québécois vernacular, thus producing a precise geographic anchoring — one motivated not by a desire to naturalize Faulkner, but rather to present his work to readers in French-speaking countries via Québec. The notes accompanying our translation operate according to the macrotext, taking into account the identity of the characters and their power relationships, situations of enunciation, our previous choices and the isotopies of the novel
