Le retrait glaciaire sur la bordure occidentale des Appalaches du Québec fut influencépar la topographie. Le relief est marqué par des crêtes et des dépressions orientéesNNE-SSO, d'origine structurale (écailles, klippen) et quelques monadnocks de rochesintrusives : il s'élève par paliers vers l'E, de 80 à 960 m (monts Sutton). On ne peut pasdéceler de front de stabilisation important. De plus, les dépôts de contact glaciairecartographies ne paraissent pas avoir de signification climatique précise. Les corpssédimentaires fluvioglaciaires associés au retrait glaciaire sont dispersés sur les pentes,au coeur des vallées majeures et dans des talwegs mineurs. Les dépôts sont organisés selondeux types nets: l'un arqué, concentrique, fait de segments morainiques NE-SO, subparallèleset irrégulièrement espacés (100 à 500 m); l'autre, SE-NO, donc radial et perpendiculaire auprécédent. L'analyse des structures sédimentaires démontre le caractère unidirectionnel descourants à l'origine de chaque dépôt fluvio-glaciaire (vers le SE et le S). Chaqueaccumulation, ou série d'accumulations, constitue un phénomène qui doit être analysé etinterprété « individuellement ». Plusieurs segments des dépôts antérieurement attribués au« Complexe morainique du front des Hautes Terres » ne font pas exception à ce modèle deretrait des glaces. Les fronts glaciaires s'adaptent aux reliefs, au cours d'un reculquelque peu erratique. Il paraît difficile de relier ces fronts glaciaires mineurs. Leurdirection est oblique au « Complexe morainique du front des Hautes Terres » : celui-cin'existe pas en tant que tel dans la région étudiée.Ice retreat along the western edge of the Appalachian Mountains of Québec wascontrolled by the topography. The main physiographic elements are NNE-SSW ridges anddepressions formed by tectonic forces (slices, klippen) and some monadnocks of intrusiverocks; the relief steps up eastward, from 80 to 960 m (at the Sutton Mountains). Nosignificant stabilization of the ice margin can be inferred from the field data. Moreover,the mapped ice contact deposits do not relate to climatic events. The features associatedwith ice retreat are scattered glaciofluvial bodies that occupy slopes and bottoms of majorvalleys and minor thalwegs. Two different types of glacio-fluvial deposits have beenobserved. The first one, arcuate and concentric, is composed of NE-SW morainic crests, whichare subparallel and irregularly spaced (100-500 m). The second one, trending SE-NW, isperpendicular to the former one. Sedimentary structures within the glaciofluvial ridgesindicate unidirectional currents at their origin (mainly SE and S). Each accumulation orsuccession of deposits has to be analyzed individually. Several segments of the "HighlandFront Moraine Complex'' also correspond to this mode of ice retreat. During this veryirregular retreat, the ice front was strongly influenced by the topography. Any tentativecorrelations of such minor ice fronts would be risky: they trend obliquely to the positionof the "Highland Front Moraine Complex'' which does not exist per se in the studied area
