This paper is an examination of the responses of Montreal's anglophone elite to poverty and homelessness. It studies the Montreal Protestant House of Industry and Refuge from its opening in 1863 to 1900. Influenced by the emerging liberal ideology that interpreted charity as moral weakness, the Board of Directors of this private charity imposed a work test to restrict aid and to “reform” recipients, and provided minimal living conditions in its shelters. As they gained experience in relief provision, the Directors grappled with the contradictions raised by their moral condemnation of the unemployed and the reality of unemployment and homelessness. Ultimately, their humanitarianism and Christian spirit prevented them from allowing their fellow citizens to starve on the streets.Dans cet article, l'auteure se penche sur les réactions de l'élite anglophone montréalaise à la pauvreté et aux sans-abri. L'objet d'étude est le Montreal Protestant House of Industry and Refuge, de son ouverture en 1863 à 1900. Influencé par l'idéologie libérale en émergence qui considère la charité comme une faiblesse morale, le conseil d'administration de cette organisation de charité privée impose donc un rest d'aptitude au travail pour limiter l'aide et « réformer » les bénéficiaires, et pour offrir des conditions de vie minimales dans ses refuges. Toutefois, l'expérience aidant, les administrateurs ont dû composer avec les contradictions soulevées par leur condamnation morale des sans-emploi et la réalité du chômage et des sans-abri. En fin de compte, leur humanitarisme et leur esprit chrétien les ont empêché de permettre que leurs concitoyens meurent de faim dans les rues
