The period from 1870 to 1890 saw the widespread dispersal of the Red River Metis. Inthe past historians have attributed this migration either to the inability of the Metis toadjust to settled society, or to the forced dispossession by the Canadian government.Both these views have some validity, but oversimplify the causes of the Metis emigrationfrom Red River. An examination of the changing nature of the Metis family economyand the dynamics of migration show that the Metis movement out of Red River hadbegun well before 1870 and was a response to new economic opportunities. Changes inthe Metis economy after 1850, changes that integrated the Red River Settlement into awider capitalist economy, also divided Metis society on economic and occupational linesand affected the decision whether to emigrate or not. Thus the dispersal of the Metis wasin some sense an adaptive and innovative response, one that had a different effect on thevarious Metis groups.Pendant la période qui s'étend de 1870 à 1890, se produit la dispersion des Métis de laRivière- Rouge. Les historiens ont attribué cette migration à l'incapacité des Métis des'adapter à la colonisation ou à la mainmise du gouvernement canadien sur leurs terres.Ces deux thèses se défendent. Mais elles simplifient à outrance les causes du départ desMétis de la Rivière-Rouge. Une analyse des changements survenus dans l'économiefamiliale des Métis et de la dynamique de leur migration montrent que leur exode acommencé bien avant 1870 et qu'il était la réponse à une nouvelle conjonctureéconomique. Les changements dans l'économie métisse après 1850, changements quiintègrent l'économie de la Rivière-Rouge à une économie capitaliste plus large, divisentaussi la société métisse dans son économie et ses modes de vie, et ils entraînent la décisiond'émigrer ou non. En conséquence, la dispersion des Métis a représenté, d'une certainefaçon, une adaptation et une innovation, ce qui n'a pas eu le même effet sur les différentsgroupes de Métis
