Située au croisement des phénomènes d'endettement et d'avance du marché dans l'univers rural bas-canadien, la consommation courante présente des particularités dont l'étude apporte un éclairage essentiel à l'un comme à l'autre: d'abord comme véhicule privilégié de V eclosión économique et matérielle de ce monde rural, via la ronde des biens de consommation, mais aussi comme point de fuite du capital villageois. Le livre de comptes (1794-1797) de Joseph Cartier, marchand général à Saint-Hya- cinthe, a permis l'étude de ce secteur mal connu de la vie économique rurale. Une élaboration méthodologique originale a été mis au point pour la transcription infor- matique et l'analyse du document. Les premiers résultats sur la consommation ont permis de déceler la présence de besoins issus d'habitudes et de valeurs bien enracinées même en périodes de crise, et entraînant pour plusieurs une dépendance économique accrue. La présente étude apar ailleurs conduit à remettre en question le bien-fondé de ïidéal d'autosuffisance dont on affuble beaucoup de sociétés rurales passées.The study of the ledgers of one general merchant, Joseph Cartier of Saint-Hyacinthe, for the late 18th century allows an insight into the economic structure of rural Lower Canada during this period. This source provides a view of two important aspects of this rural society: the way in which the local merchant acted as a vehicle for the introduction of consumer goods and, coincidently, became a net exporter of local capital. The author has devised an original methodology for the computer-assisted transcription and analy- sis of the data provided by the ledgers. The first results of his survey suggest that consumer buying habits were deeply rooted, and even in times of crisis, the importation of goods from metropolitan markets continued. In some, patterns of economic depen- dency on "outside" consumer goods increased. The preliminary findings of this study suggest that traditional self-sufficiency models for rural Lower Canada during the late 18th century need to be reexamined
