La sociologie de la réception artistique essaie de tirer toutes les conséquences du fait – souvent rappelé mais plus rarement exploré – que les oeuvres picturales ou musicales comme les oeuvres littéraires n’existent et ne durent que par l’activité interprétative de leurs publics successifs. Prenant appui sur une observation quantifiée réalisée dans un musée français (Aix-en-Provence), cette enquête multiplie les indicateurs des comportements et des déambulations des visiteurs dans leur face-à-face avec des toiles singulières. Rapportés aux groupes qu’ils caractérisent, les classements et les catégorisations des oeuvres sont opérés a posteriori à partir du traitement dont celles-ci sont l’objet : les déterminations et les composantes du goût que révèle cette enquête s’écartent tout autant des catégorisations savantes de l’histoire de l’art que des découpages de la sociologie des consommations culturelles.The sociology of artistic perception seeks to expose all the consequences from the fact (often mentioned, but hardly ever investigated) that pictorial or musical works, like literary works, exist and last only because of the interpretative process of their successive audiences. Based on quantified observation carried out in a French museum (in Aix-en-Provence), this survey shows numerous indications of the visitors’ behaviour and walking itinerary when confronted with unusual paintings. Once they have been subject to analysis, the works of art are classified and categorized – these classifications are dealt with according to the groups they represent – and the survey thus reveals that what determines and defines the components of “ taste ” differs as much from the learned categorizations of art history as from the criteria commonly used by the sociology of cultural consumerism
