This paper examines the gender and class values reflected in the journal of a young English woman who lived with her husband near Sherbrooke during the 1830s. Contrary to the claims of studies dealing with the British gentry in Upper Canada, the lives of the local elite described in Lucy Peel's journal do not conform to the rigid separation of a female private world and a male public one. Men took an active part in the domestic sphere, and women played a central role in maintaining social boundaries.Little analyse ici les valeurs sociales et les rapports hommes-femmes évoqués dans le journal intime d'une jeune Anglaise, qui vécut avec son mari dans la région de Sherbrooke au cours des années 1830. Contrairement à ce qu'avancent certaines études sur la haute bourgeoisie britannique du Haut-Canada, la vie quotidienne de l'élite locale, telle que décrite par Lucy Peel dans son journal, ne s'articulait pas sur une stricte division de la sphère privée, réservée aux femmes, et de la sphère publique, confiée aux hommes. L'auteur démontre en effet que ces derniers participaient activement à la vie familiale, tandis que les femmes jouaient un rôle clé dans le maintien des barrières sociales
