This paper uses the fates of farm families in a southern Manitoba community to examine the evolution of nineteenth-century inheritance practice during the development of the Canadian prairies. In Montcalm, settlers from Quebec shared their new rural municipality with anglophones from eastern Ontario. While parents were originally committed to establishing as many of their progeny as possible, by the 1920s landholders tended to liquidate their assets for distribution among already independent middle-aged children. Generally, this meant that property was transferred in portable and individual bundles, and decisions on how to make a living were left to the inheriting generation. Aging parents still provided for their children's futures, but because their relationship to the market economy had changed, so too had their relationship to their children. While simplifying obligations between farm parents and children, market change increasingly expressed family ties in the language of the marketplace.Cet article évoque le sort des familles agricoles d'une collectivité du sud du Manitoba pour illustrer l'évolution des coutumes concernant les successions au XIXe siècle, pendant la colonisation des prairies canadiennes. À Montcalm, des colons québécois partageaient leur nouvelle municipalité rurale avec des anglophones venus de l'Est ontarien. Alors que les parents avaient été jusque là déterminés à installer le plus grand nombre possible de leurs enfants, dans les années 1920, les propriétaires terriens avaient tendance à liquider leurs biens et à en répartir le fruit entre leurs enfants déjà adultes et indépendants. Il s'ensuivait que les biens était transférés en lots individuels en espèces, et que les héritiers choisissaient seuls la manière de gagner leur vie. Les parents vieillissants assuraient toujours l'avenir de leurs enfants, mais parce que leurs rapports avec l'économie de marché avaient changé, leurs rapports avec leurs enfants avaient aussi changé. Tout en simplifiant les rapports entre parents et enfants au sein de la famille agricole, l'évolution du marché modelait les liens familiaux selon des considérations économiques
