La pratique de la thérapie m'a conduit graduellement à recevoir des personnes atteintes de maladies chroniques et à accompagner certaines d'entre elles jusqu'à leur mort. Dans cet article, j'expose les lois et les principes de base qui guident mes interventions auprès des malades en phase terminale et de leur entourage. Mes découvertes et observations au cours de ce cheminement m'ont amené à voir la mort comme un processus de transformation naturel et à définir le rôle du thérapeute - ou de toute personne appelée à vivre une relation d'aide auprès du mourant - comme celui d'un guide qui d'une part, facilite ce passage de la vie à la mort et qui, d'autre part, prépare le détachement des personnes en contact étroit avec le mourant. De cet échange vie-mort découle une prise de conscience, à savoir que "s'approcher de sa mort, c'est s'approcher de sa vie", ce qui accroît d'autant l'importance d'être pleinement disponible au moment présent.The practice of therapy has gradually led me to meet people suffering from chronic illness, and to accompany some of them to the point of their death. In this article, I describe the basic laws and principles which guide my interventions with terminal phase patients, and with their entourage. My discoveries and observations in the course of this work have led me to view death as a natural process of transformation, and thus to define the role of the therapist, or any other person called upon to experience a helping relationship with a dying patient, as that of a guide facilitating, on the one hand, this passage from life to death, and on the other, initiating the detachment from persons close to the dying individual. The philosophy which emanates from this life-death exchange, flows from the awareness that I want to share in this text, that is to say, "to approach one's death is to approach one's life", and underlines the importance of being completely available to the present moment
