Anticosti constitue une grande île du golfe du Saint-Laurent dont le peuplement n'a pas fait l'objet d'études approfondies. Il en est ainsi de la répartition de la population au cours de six périodes historiques.La tardivité du peuplement tient à une convergence de facteurs naturels (isolement, nordicité, large batture), perceptifs (mauvaise réputation due à de nombreux naufrages et fausses évaluations) et politiques (tenure, despotisme, contrôle). Au cours du dernier siècle, le chiffre de la population totale a pu varier de quelques centaines à quelques milliers d'individus, au gré des aventures développementales. Francophones au anglophones ont dominé suivant les époques.En plus de la mer, trois principaux écoumènes : sites ponctuels sur le pourtour (Baie-du-Renard), l'extrémité ouest (Anse-aux-Fraises et Baie-Sainte-Claire) et, au sud-ouest, Port-Menier qui concentre maintenant 85% de toute la population permanente d'Anticosti. Les Menier (1896-1925), l'ère du bois (1926-1973) et, depuis, l'administration québécoise ont permis cette concentration. Quant à l'intérieur de l'île, si l'on accepte le Jupiter (pêche sportive au saumon), il n'a pratiquement été pénétré qu'au milieu du XXe siècle. La partie ouest, la plus près du Québec, domine donc.The history of settlement of Anticosti Island, located in the northern part of the Gulf of St.Lawrence, is still partly unknown. However, we have identified six periods in the development of the area.Permanent colonization arrived late due to physical factors (isolation, nordicity, reef), perceptual factors (terror to sailors, negative economic evaluation) and political factors (tenure, overcontrol, French/English opposition). On the whole, the total number of inhabitants has varied from a mere few hundreds to thousands.Three main settlement regions: series of isolated peripherical sites (as Fox Bay), the west Front (Strawberry Cove, English Bay) and the capital, Port-Menier (on Ellis Bay) which alone retain now 85% of the total population. Interior of the Island, except for the Jupiter Basin, was opened to large scale exploitation after the middle of this century
