SUMMARY OF RECENT FINDINGS ON THE CHILEAN QUATERNARY The author establishes what findings hâve been made on the Chilean Quaternary during the last ten years. He, in turn, examines climatic change, sea-level variation, tec314 CAHIERS DE GEOGRAPHIE togenic movements and volcanic phenomena. As far as climatic change is concerned, Chile, because of its iatitudinal length is divided into the following régions : the extremely arid désert, the marginal désert, the semi-arid région, central Chile, the lake région and fjord région. Sea-level variations were studied particularly along the northern-central and northern coasts. The author thus examines the pliocene-pleistocene limit and shows the triple aspect geomorphological, sedimentological and paleontological — of the origin of the marine quaternary. Traces of at least six marine cycles are discussed, each one characterized by a transgression, an apogée and a régression. Finaliy, the relation between the marine and continental formations it raised. Results of the quaternary tectonic needs to be re-examined. The neotectonic is characterized by normal faults whilst the présent tectonic shows récurrent faultings and déformation with a long range curve. In northern Chile the Quaternary volcanism is characterized by deep fissure émissions in the mio-pliocene, and by punctiform émissions in the Quaternary. In central and southern Chile there is found a singular volcanic phenomenon : lahars. There are still considérable gaps in our knowledge of the Chilean Quaternary : the problem of old glaciations deserves deeper study ; the study of climatic change should be made more précise ; the neotectonic aspects should be re-evaluated. There is a need for accurate topographical and geomorphological maps. Finaliy, the dating of sea-level variation should be made more accurate. AN thèse studies call for a multidisciplinary effort, particularly in the fjord région, an area almost untouched by research.
