Cet article présente une recherche sur l’impact de l’éducation bilingue (langueafricaine + français) sur l’autonomisation des Burkinabés. D’abord, le cadre historiquepermet de comprendre le contexte éducatif et sociolinguistique actuels en Afrique et plusprécisément au Burkina Faso. Ensuite, le fonctionnement des écoles bilingues et unilinguesdu Burkina Faso est présenté. Finalement, les résultats préliminaires permettent desouligner quelques caractéristiques quant aux anciens élèves de l’école bilinguecomparativement à leurs homologues de l’école unilingue francophone.Africa’s educational systems are undergoing a quiet revolution. From a system workingexclusively in the old colonial languages – usually French or English – bilingual schoolsintegrating local indigenous languages are sprouting up in different regions of Africa withmultinational support. This paper argues that bilingual education is a sustainable way toincrease empowerment and self-identity in a community of Burkina Faso. First a discussion ofthe African and Burkinabe linguistic and historical context is presented. The currenteducational system is described and analysed. Finally the results of the first phase offield work comparing classrooms from the two types of schools are presented
