Cet article a pour but d’examiner d’abord les grandes orientations de l’approche thérapeutique du suicide qui s’est développée au Québec depuis une trentaine d’années, puis de procéder à une analyse sommaire des deux régimes de suicide qui s’y sont succédé au vingtième siècle. À bonne distance de la notion de « maladie mentale », les auteurs veulent alors montrer que « l’exception » québécoise en matière de suicide a tenu à la conjonction de deux transformations sociales de grande ampleur ayant marqué le Québec du dernier demi-siècle, la première affectant, en général, les sociétés salariales, la seconde propre à la mutation du Canada français dont est issue la société québécoise. L’interprétation des auteurs soutient que ces deux processus historiques touchent à la régulation de l’identité de genre par l’institution familiale et que la redéfinition québécoise de la référence collective est allée, en ce domaine, dans le même sens que les nouvelles formes d’intégration à la vie collective charriées par le système de l’emploi et par le providentialisme, cette résonnance ayant accru la portée existentielle de l’une et l’autre mutation.This article aims to examine, firstly, the major orientations of the therapeutic approach to suicide that has developed in Québec over the past thirty years, and then to carry out a summary analysis of the two systemic approaches to suicide that succeeded one another during the twentieth century. At a considerable distance from the concept of “mental illness”, the authors wish to show that the Québec “exception” in the area of suicide was related to the conjunction of two large-scale social transformations that have marked Québec over the past half-century. The first of these generally affects wage-based societies, and the second is specific to the changes in French Canada that gave rise to Québec society. According to the authors’ interpretation, these two historical processes affect the regulation of gender identity through the institution of the family, and Québec’s redefinition of the collective reference in this field has gone in the same direction as the new forms of integration into collective life that accompany the system of employment and the welfare state, a resonance that has accentuated the existential scope of both of these transformations
