Infirmant l’idée reçue selon laquelle le « style coulant » (Baudelaire, Barbey d’Aurevilly) de George Sand flattait la bourgeoisie, Mont-Revêche exemplifie une écriture subversive qui travaille à mettre en cause la consécration des valeurs bourgeoises au lendemain du coup d’État de Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte (1851). Sous cet angle, ce roman brosse un tableau théâtralisé de la respectabilité bourgeoise pour mieux la déconstruire à des fins ironiques ou parodiques. La difficulté de George Sand à transposer Mont-Revêche au théâtre pour une scène parisienne, rappelle, par contre, qu’à la différence de la littérature romanesque « d’avant-garde » (les Goncourt, Flaubert), la production théâtrale sous le Second Empire devait s’accommoder de l’horizon d’attente de la bourgeoisie pour connaître le succès.Written when the Second Empire began (1851), Mont-Revêche invalidates the idea that middles classes were satisfied with the George Sand’s style (“le style coulant, cher aux bourgeois,” according to Baudelaire and Barbey d’Aurevilly). In fact, this novel challenges middles classes’ values by revealing their hypocrisy thanks to the irony or parody. However, George Sand could not make Mont-Revêche suitable on Parisian stages because only the plays meeting the middles classes’ expectations were successful under the Second Empire
