Dans la seconde moitié du xviie siècle, le portrait mondain devient un véritable divertissement de société. Or on retrouve, dans les recueils de portraits publiés dans l’entourage de Mademoiselle de Montpensier, non seulement une majorité de modèles féminins, mais encore plusieurs femmes portraitistes qui s’appliquent à décrire tantôt leurs propres qualités, tantôt celles des autres. Cet article propose d’examiner la mise en place d’un ethos féminin à partir d’exemples tirés des Divers portraits, recueil publié en 1659. On verra de quelle façon cet ethos repose sur différentes stratégies rhétoriques qui contribuent à donner une voix, voire une légitimité, aux femmes portraitistes en particularisant la mise en scène de soi, tout en apportant une solution aux problèmes éthiques posés par l’art du portrait.In the second half of the seventeenth century, the society portrait became a veritable upper-class hobby. Now, in the collections of portraits published in the entourage of Mademoiselle de Montpensier, we find not only a majority of female models, but a number of female portrait painters as well who focused on describing sometimes their own qualities, and sometimes the qualities of others. The present article examines the establishment of a feminine ethos based on examples taken from Divers portraits [Various Portraits], a collection published in 1659. It will be shown in what way this ethos relied on various rhetorical strategies that helped give a voice, even a legitimacy, to female portrait painters by particularizing self-portrayal, while offering at the same time a solution to the ethical problems posed by the art of portraiture
